WV delegates gain valuable insights at the 1st International Floriculture Congress in Tagum City  

Floriculturists and plant enthusiasts from Western Visayas returned from the 1st Mindanao International Floriculture Congress, held from November 21 to 24, 2024, in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, with new ideas and strategies aimed at advancing the region’s floriculture industry.

Hosted by the Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc. (FIDI) in partnership with the City Government of Tagum, the Tagum City Tourism Arts and Culture Council, and Tagum City Garden, the gathering served as a vital hub for knowledge sharing. It showcased best practices in cultivating both imported and locally grown flowers, indigenous plants, and hybrids developed by skilled growers.

The event featured several international experts such as Sappasiri Chaovanich and Busayamas Yun Udomphol from Thailand, who shared their extensive knowledge on various aspects of today’s dynamic horticulture industry. Participants were inspired by the opportunity to learn directly from these industry leaders, gaining valuable insights into the latest horticultural trends and techniques.

Western Visayas’ participation is seen as a significant step forward for the region’s floriculture sector. Exposure to a variety of plant species—ranging from orchids and bonsais to rare hybrids—has equipped participants with innovative cultivation techniques and marketing strategies that will enhance the competitiveness of Western Visayas in the national floriculture scene.

“The summit has allowed WV participants to connect with floriculture experts, gain insights into emerging trends, and explore sustainable practices that we can adapt to our local environment,” said DA-WV Agriculturist II and Ornamental and Cut Flower Commodity Leader Sally Binas.

The Department of Agriculture – Western Visayas (DA-WV) sponsored 19 delegates to attend the summit, with additional participants from various local government units (LGUs) across different cities and municipalities also taking part in the event.

The summit also underscored the economic potential of floriculture, with approximately 100 sellers showcasing high-value plants, attracting buyers from all over the country. Region VI delegates are eager to replicate this vibrant trade in their local markets, which could boost livelihoods and promote tourism in the region.

By participating in this groundbreaking summit, Region VI floriculturists have laid the foundation for a thriving and innovative floriculture industry that not only celebrates the region’s biodiversity but also contributes to its economic growth. # (Text and Photos by: MSSubang/DA-RAFIS 6)
