Gwen Raylene A. Ereje (front, 2nd from left) is one of the five winners in the National World Food Day Poster Making Contest.

Western Visayas’ poster was recognized as one of the top five in the National Level of the World Food Day (WFD) Poster Making Contest. Gwen Raylene A. Ereje of Talisay South Elementary School, Talisay City, Negros Occidental received her plaque of recognition and P10,000.00 cash prize from the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during the WFD 2023 Celebration held at Quezon City Memorial Circle on October 16. She was accompanied by her coach Elena A. Ereje and DA Western Visayas’ Regional Information Officer James Earl E. Ogatis in the national awarding.

This year’s WFD celebration serves as a platform to bring to the forefront the proactive measures taken by the DA in addressing the pressing issues of water wastage and scarcity. One of the key ways in which the DA is making strides in this regard is through the organization of the annual poster-making event in partnership with the Department of Education to amplify their impact.

ARTWORK’S DESCRIPTION

In the artwork’s narrative, water stands as an essential element, embodying health, prosperity, and the very essence of life. Under the theme “Water is food, water is life. Leave no one behind,” the concept highlights the pivotal role that water plays in people’s lives. The Earth takes on the form of a droplet emanating from a faucet, serving as a potent symbol of water’s irreplaceable significance for all forms of life.

In the top left corner, a farmer can be seen tending to his carabao, providing it with water, thereby underscoring water’s importance to animals. In the bottom left corner, another farmer is depicted, proudly holding a bountiful harvest of nutritious produce, reinforcing the fact that water is indispensable in the cultivation of the food that sustains a healthy lifestyle.

In this same corner, a young girl diligently tends to plants and trees. Through the act of planting more trees, oxygen supply can be augmented, flooding effects mitigated, and food and protection provided for a multitude of birds and mammals. Shifting to the top right of the artwork, a man can be observed taking a bath, presenting yet another example of water’s importance in personal hygiene and overall well-being.

Finally, the artwork depicts two Filipino children warmly embracing the Earth, a poignant symbol of their love and appreciation for water. It is imperative for people to recognize the paramount importance of water, as it serves as the cornerstone of well-being for all life forms and holds the key to a bright and healthy future. ###
