To boost local goat production and provide additional income for farmers, the Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayas turned over a Php 3-million Goat Multiplier Farm Project to the San Jose Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC) on August 6. The project, situated in Brgy. Sido, Sibalom, Antique, is part of DA’s Livestock Economic Enterprise Development (LEED) Program.
The Goat Multiplier Farm seeks to enhance the genetic potential of indigenous goat breeds, improve local production and inventory, and create new livelihood opportunities for farmers. San Jose MPC will manage the 27-head goat farm composed of 24 does and three bucks for the facility to become a sustainable breeding program and a learning hub for best practices in goat farming, breeding, and livestock management.
Aimed at diversifying the cooperative’s income streams and responding to the growing demand for goat meat and milk, the multiplier farm project will help generate employment in the locality and promote gender-inclusive practices by empowering women in goat rearing activities.
To ensure sustainability, the project includes components such as breeder goats, feeds and veterinary supplies, farm equipment, and newly constructed goat housing facilities.
As a partner in the implementation of the project, the cooperative provided the land and additional resources needed, including personnel to manage day-to-day operations. Coop members will undergo training on animal husbandry, nutrition, and disease management.###
