San Joaquin, Iloilo holds farmers, fishers’ day

To recognize the contributions of the local food producers, the Municipal Government Unit of San Joaquin held a Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Day with 1,035 farmers and fisherfolk participants in a program on March 24 in San Joaquin, Iloilo.
A total of 935 farmers from 82 barangays and 100 fishermen from 20 coastal barangays attended the celebration per Municipal Ordinance 2020-07.
The ordinance aims to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of the farmers and fisherfolk sectors and to strengthen their partnerships with the government in implementing programs toward food security, sustainable development, and eradication of poverty in rural areas.
Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas OIC-Regional Technical Director Zarlina Cuello emphasized the importance of establishing the Farm and Fisheries Clustering and Consolidation Program (F2C2).
“ Swerte ang San Joaquin. Balanse ang inyo resources. Ang iban nga banwa agrikultura lang, wala pangisda. Ang aton gobyerno nag akda paagi sa DA sang Administrative Order 27, pag encourage sa aton nga mangingisda kag mangunguma nga mag consolidate ukon ma cluster paagi sa asosyasyon,” said Cuello.
She added that government resources would be utilized through associations from production to marketing while participating in the value chain.
Agricultural Training Institute, Bureau of Fisheries Aquatic Resources, Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, Philippine Carabao Center, Department of Trade and Industry, and Office of the Provincial Agriculturist also discussed their respective programs and services offered to farmers and fishers-participants.###By Ann Marie S.
