Over 100 farmers, including association members and barangay captains gathered to participate in the recent Tekno Klinik, aimed at equipping local farmers with knowledge about the various agricultural programs implemented by the Department of Agriculture Western Visayas (DA-WV).

This event served as an important gathering for farmers to gain insights into farming techniques and strategies that could potentially boost their productivity and income. The forum, attended by group of farmers, was graced by Passi City Vice-Mayor Elyzer Chavez, who highlighted the significance of agriculture in the region.

Vice-Mayor Chavez recognized the vast agricultural areas in Passi City, attributing much of the community’s success, including the ability to send children to school and produce professionals, to farming.

He stressed the significant contribution of farmers in ensuring food security for the nation and urged them to embrace new technologies, especially in the face of climate change. He encouraged the farmers to actively participate in seminars and to innovate, emphasizing the importance of these tools in improving their livelihoods.

“Farmers have a vital role for our food security. Adopt new technologies to face climate change. Attend seminars and innovate for better livelihoods,” Vice-Mayor Chavez underscored.

Meanwhile, DA-WV Regional Information Officer James Earl Ogatis shed light on the department’s undertaking to promote clustering and consolidation aiming to transform and modernize agriculture, making it more profitable, sustainable, and resilient while ensuring food security for the nation. This shift towards consolidation will empower farmers with economies of scale for their agricultural produce.

In addition, the DA-WV provided an in-depth overview of the programs and projects that have been put into action within the region during the event. These initiatives are specifically designed to empower local farmers.

One program component highlighted during the discussion was the Registry System on Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) as an initial requirement for any interventions or support provided by the DA.

The event also featured the F2C2 program guidelines, which offer a structured framework for farmers to follow.

In recognition of the growing challenges posed by climate change, the event also delved into climate-resilient agriculture strategies which are crucial for adapting to changing weather patterns and ensuring that agriculture remains sustainable in the face of environmental shifts.

To complement these strategies, various regulatory programs and services were discussed to help educate the farmers. These programs are designed to provide information, resources, and support necessary to navigate the regulatory aspects of agriculture effectively, such as compliance with environmental and quality standards.

The presentation of these programs and projects showcased the DA’s commitment to boost agricultural development in Western Visayas. By making the farmers aware of these resources and strategies, the DA is helping them stay well-equipped to address the challenges and opportunities in the dynamic agricultural situation of the region.

DA-WV APCO for Iloilo province and Senior Agriculturist Gareth Bayate also addressed the farmers’ queries and concerns regarding DA programs and interventions tailored to Passi City’s agricultural needs. The event was well-supported by local authorities, including Committee Chair on Agriculture and City Councilor Paul Girard Panes and City Agriculturist Araceli Alba underscoring the local government’s commitment to enhance agricultural productivity of the town. ### Texts by Myleen Subang & Photos by Jerem De Guzman/DA-RAFIS 6
