The vibrant Manggahan Festival 2024 in Guimaras highlighted a significant celebration with the Farmers and Fisherfolks’ Day, gathering over 500 participants from the five municipalities. Held on May 15, 2024, the event showcased the important role of the agriculture and fisheries sectors in the local economy. Provincial Governor JC Rahman Nava took the opportunity to announce the province’s commitment to advancing these sectors with the launch of the agri-fishery industrial village, a ten-hectare project set to host various agricultural processing centers, including a copra oil mill. Governor Nava emphasized the completion of a feed mill this year, aimed at sourcing tons of corn from local farmers to ensure affordable feed for livestock. Additionally, plans for a livestock multiplier farm for swine were revealed. The provincial government is focusing on cost-effective production of corn, livestock, and mariculture. The national dairy program has also commenced, with 50 cattles already at breeding stage, aimed at boosting both local milk consumption and tourism.

Regional agency leaders expressed their support for Guimaras’ agricultural initiatives. DA Western Visayas Regional Executive Director Dennis R. Arpia praised the province for its famed mangoes and growing agricultural diversity, reaffirming the DA’s full support for local government interventions that enhance farmers’ livelihoods. BFAR Regional Director Remia A. Aparri noted significant improvements in the lives of farmers and fisherfolk, highlighting increased production of milkfish, salt, and seaweeds. She urged fishermen to register with the fisherfolk system and advocated for ocean conservation to sustain resources for future generations.

The festival also featured the turnover of projects: The Guimaras Mango Growers and Producers Development Cooperative (GMGPDC) received the PhilGap certification for mango, while Farmer Hernane Gabasa was awarded a Certificate of Recognition. Swine production livelihood packages were granted to various associations, including Lutongs Farmers’ Association, San Lorenzo Hog Raisers Association, Guimaras Backyard Hog Raisers Association, Tinadtaran Piña Agsanayan Agrarian Reform Cooperative, and Sibunag Farmers Guild. Additionally, the San Roque Coastal Environment Program Association, Inc. was awarded with a goat production livelihood project.

The day was filled with various competitions and activities celebrating agricultural skills and talents organized by the Provincial Office for Agricultural Services (POAS). Highlights included Palaro and skills competitions, showcasing the expertise and sportsmanship of participants. Cultural competitions, including Binalaybay, Komposo, and the Mr. and Mrs. Farmer Festival pageant, added to the festive atmosphere. An Agricultural Information Caravan led by the DA Regional Field Office 6, provided valuable knowledge and meaningful exchanges of insights with farmers and fisherfolk.

Provincial Administrator Emmanuel Galila emphasized the festival’s focus on appreciating farmers and fisherfolk, recognizing their contributions to the province’s economy. The Manggahan Festival 2024 celebrated Guimaras’ rich agricultural heritage and set the stage for a future of innovation and prosperity in the agri-fishery sectors. Governor Nava’s appeal for increased production and the provincial government’s unwavering support promise a thriving future for the province’s farmers and fisherfolk. ###(MCMBuala/RAFIS 6) Photos by CFLauresta
