Aligning with Jordan, Guimaras’ Foundation Day, the local farming and fishing communities gathered for the annual Farmers and Fisherfolk Day on December 13, 2023. The event brought together 140 farmers from the 14 barangays of the town, showcasing the vital role agriculture lays in the community.
In a show of support, the Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas (DA-WV), led by Regional Information Officer James Earl Ogatis, lauded the hardworking farmers of Jordan and the entire province for their dedication to ensuring food sufficiency, especially in light of the ongoing El Niño phenomenon. Ogatis emphasized the importance of availing the services and programs offered by the Department and its attached agencies.
Agriculturists Paul Andrew Villeta and Michelle Ardeña from DA-WV enlightened the audience on the services and interventions available under the High-Value Crops and Corn Program. Their presentations aimed to empower farmers with knowledge to enhance productivity and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
Meanwhile, Guimaras Provincial Agriculturist Alvin Nava underscored farming’s significant role in the province’s economy, revealing that 34 percent relies on agriculture. He expressed gratitude to the farmers and fisherfolks for their substantial contribution to the province’s economic well-being.
As a part of the support extended to the farming community, DA-WV distributed Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, water sprinklers, caps, and a variety of vegetable seeds and seedlings from the Iloilo Research Station-Guimaras Satellite Office. These resources are aimed at empowering farmers with the tools needed to thrive in their agricultural endeavors.
Beyond a celebration of agricultural heritage, the Farmers and Fisherfolk Day served as an avenue for collaboration and knowledge-sharing, reinforcing the resilience and unity of the farming and fishing communities in Jordan, Guimaras. # # # (Text by: Myleen Subang/DA-RAFIS | Photos by: Sheila Mae Toreno/DA-RAFIS 6)
