Information Caravan highlights Farmers and Fisherfolk’s Day in San Dionisio, Iloilo

With the theme “Bugay sang agrikultura kag pangisdaan aton pasanyugon; Panginbulahan sa aton kag sa sunod henerasyon,” the Agricultural Information Caravan and Technology forum highlighted the Farmers and fisherfolk Day celebration in San Dionisio, Iloilo on May 7.
More than 200 farmers and fisherfolk from different barangays participated in the caravan which aims to increase agricultural stakeholders’ understanding of agriculture and fisheries practices, technology transfer and adoption, and bring closer the services of the DA-Western Visayas.
San Dionisio Executive Assistant II Bonifacio D. Camilan acknowledged the important contribution of farmers and fisherfolk as the heroes of the world for providing and sustaining community development and food security. While Municipal Agriculturist Marie Vic C. Abiar underscored the significance of recognizing and celebrating the agri sector’s efforts and success.
Iloilo Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Ildefonso T. Toledo expressed his appreciation to the sector for continually supporting Iloilo provincial government agricultural initiatives in helping the lowly households, especially the 12,000 families with malnourished children.
He stressed that the province’s farm mechanization, livestock and poultry interventions, and fisheries and coastal conservation efforts are all aligned for enhanced production and increase income of individual farmers.
Meanwhile, Maria Aimee A. Sobrevega, OIC-Chief of the Provincial Fisheries Office reiterated the agency’s support for the fisheries sector. While Elvin Rutor, Coconut Development Officer of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), presented the agency’s services and assistance programs.
DA-WV Information Officer II Myleen S. Subang encouraged the farmers and fisherfolk to continue to promote the agriculture and fisheries sector through innovation, science-based approaches, and climate-resilient technologies. She emphasized the need for constant communication among farmers and agricultural extension workers (AEWS) to ensure effective and efficient roll-out of science-based technologies. While Rilyn Castro of the Iloilo Agricultural Program Coordinating Office discussed the programs and projects implemented in San Dionisio.
