\Guimaras mango production thrives amidst El Niño challenges Despite the adverse effects of El Niño on agricultural crops, mango production in Guimaras province has experienced a notable increase due to the prolonged dry season.
The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) in Western Visayas has reported heightened activity in inspecting and issuing regulatory documents for the movement of fresh mango fruits domestically and internationally. From January to April of 2022 to 2024, there has been a significant surge in the transport of mangoes from Panay and Guimaras Islands.
This year alone, the Bureau has inspected 80.57 metric tons (MT) of mangoes for domestic movement and 0.36 metric tons for export. GS International recently exported 352.79 kilograms of fresh mangoes to Switzerland on February 17th, with another export inspection scheduled for April 27th, targeting the same destination.
Looking ahead, Wonders Farm of Guimaras plans to make its debut in the international market with the commercial export of Guimaras mangoes to Norway in June. In the face of El Niño’s challenges, Guimaras’ mango industry stands resilient, showcasing the adaptability and perseverance of local farmers.###MSSubang/DA-RAFIS 6
