DAWV facilitates Agri Info Caravan, addresses soil health and agency program updates

On April 19, 2024, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Western Visayas facilitated an insightful gathering aimed at enhancing knowledge about optimizing soil health and various agricultural programs and updates. The event held in conjunction with the 68th Aklan Day, drew the attention of approximately 180 farmers, fishers, and animal raisers from 17 municipalities across Aklan province.

Provincial Agriculturist Engr. Alexys Apolonio emphasized the importance of engaging stakeholders in agricultural discussions. Apolonio urged participants to seize the opportunity to pose pertinent questions and exchange valuable insights as custodians of the land.

The event received esteemed guests, including Aklan Vice Governor Hon. Reynaldo Quimpo and Sanguniang Member and Chair of Agriculture Committee Hon. Nemesio Neron. Quimpo conveyed gratitude on behalf of the provincial government to the DA and its attached agencies for their collaborative efforts. Expressing a commitment to alleviating poverty, Quimpo reiterated the province’s dedication to ensuring food security for all Akeanons.

SB Neron echoed sentiments of empowerment, emphasizing the significance of such caravans in fostering knowledge-sharing among farmers and facilitating dialogue on supportive agricultural policies.

Agricultural Program Coordination Officer (APCO) Aileen Belenario provided updates on various initiatives, including the Rice Farmer Financial Assistance (RFFA) schedules and upcoming fuel subsidy distributions. Belenario assured participants of strong DA interventions in Aklan, underscoring their tangible impact on local communities.

James Earl Ogatis, Chief of the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section (RAFIS), highlighted the important role of knowledge acquisition in maximizing soil health. Ogatis stressed the relevance of understanding DAWV’s programs, especially in light of evolving climatic conditions.

Representatives from DA banner programs shared valuable insights during the caravan. Topics ranged from soil sampling and testing to innovative farming techniques such as composting and intercropping. Discussions also delved into programs like the Masagana Rice Program, Unified Artificial Insemination Program (UNAIP), Rabbit Multiplier Farm, Corn Production Enhancement Project, Registry System for Basic Sector in Agriculture (RSBSA), pest control and management, greenhouse and nursery projects, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.

Herrielle Jumagbas, NFA OIC Regional Manager, shortly discussed the Rice Tariffication Law and announced increased palay procurement rates, signaling improved opportunities for local farmers.

Moreover, representatives from agencies such as the National Irrigation Authority (NIA), Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), and Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) shed light on their respective services and ongoing projects; underscoring the importance of risk management in agriculture, with discussions ranging from coconut farmer master listing to insurance coverage for fishing gears and communal nursery development.

With the technical support from personnel and agricultural technicians from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, the event provided a platform for meaningful engagement and inquiry, enriching the collective knowledge base of participants and fostering a sense of community among Aklan’s farming sector.###(MCMBuala & CLauresta/DA-RAFIS 6)
