The Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas (DA-WV), in partnership with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), recently organized the African Swine Fever (ASF) Threat to Wild Pigs National Information Caravan in Kalibo, Aklan. The event brought together stakeholders and participants from across the province to address ASF-related concerns and strengthen awareness of wildlife preservation.
Ma. Corazon Teodosio, Chief of the Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Unit of PENRO Aklan, emphasized the importance of protecting Philippine wildlife to maintain ecological balance. “Preserving wildlife is essential for sustaining our natural environment,” she said during her presentation.
BAI Veterinary Specialist Dr. Mark Joel Valeroso provided an update on the national ASF situation. He noted that certain areas remain classified as “Red Zones,” signaling a high risk of ASF outbreaks. However, Wilmer De la Cerna of DA-WV Regulatory Division shared encouraging news for the region, reporting that most areas in Western Visayas have transitioned to “Pink” or “Yellow Zones,” indicating reduced risk and improvement in ASF containment.
Valeroso also addressed common concerns about biosecurity measures, offering practical solutions to minimize ASF risks. Audio-visual presentations highlighted best practices for swine handling and biosecurity protocols to prevent contamination.
Aklan Provincial Veterinary Livestock Inspector Ivy Lachica urged locals in mountainous and woodland areas to remain vigilant in protecting wild pig populations. She stressed the importance of educating both residents and tourists about strict compliance with ASF prevention measures to mitigate the spread of the disease.
To support farmers facing ASF-related losses, Jose Ma. B. Torres, Chief of Sales and Marketing at the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), encouraged pig farmers to enroll in the PCIC’s Swine Industry Program. The insurance provides financial protection for farmers affected by ASF outbreaks, provided they meet the program’s requirements.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from DA-WV to assist pig farmers and wildlife conservationists in navigating ASF challenges. With a focus on education, collaboration, and biosecurity, the caravan underscored the agency’s proactive approach to safeguarding the swine industry and preserving biodiversity.### (text by:VNOQuimpo/AJSubade photos by:VNOQuimpo)
