To support rice farmers and enhance agricultural productivity, the Department of Agriculture (DA) Western Visayas’ Climate and Environmental Risks Management Section (CERRMS) recently conducted a proactive damage validation activity in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of San Enrique, Iloilo, the DA-Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (DA-PCIC), and the DA-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI).
This collaborative initiative aims to assess rice fields affected by brown planthopper (BPH) infestations through the use of Agricultural Drone and to develop strategic interventions to sustain high yields and promote sustainable farming practices. Agricultural technicians and experts from participating agencies inspected affected areas, gathered relevant data, and provided technical guidance to farmers.
As part of the DA-PCIC program, farmers found reassurance in the crop insurance coverage, which helps mitigate potential losses. The findings from this assessment will raise farmers’ awareness of possible pest outbreaks and equip them with strategies to combat crop diseases.
This joint effort of government agencies and local authorities underscores the importance of proactive, science-driven agricultural support as part of the government’s commitment to food security and agricultural resilience, reinforcing the adaptability and success of local farmers in Western Visayas.###
