Calinog, Iloilo celebrates 6th Semana Ka Mangunguma, highlighting agricultural resilience and innovation

The Local Government of Calinog, Iloilo, kicked off the 6th Semana Ka Mangunguma on March 1, and set to continue until March 7. This yearly event celebrates the hard work or local farmers.
Under the theme “Pagpanguma Sari-Sarion Para sa Bastante nga Pagkaon kag Paghanda sa Pagbaylo-baylo sang Panahon,” underscores the importance of embracing diverse agricultural approaches to achieve food security, while also preparing for and mitigating the effects of climate change on farming communities.
Mayor Francisco Calvo emphasized the event’s primary aim, which is to provide local farmers with a venue to exhibit and market their produce, boosting both economic prospects and community pride. In his address, Mayor Calvo outlined initiatives aimed at bolstering agricultural sustainability and driving grassroots economic growth.
Joining in the festivities, DA-WV Regional Information Officer James Earl Ogatis commended the farmers for their outstanding efforts, noting that the abundance of farmers’ produce at the celebration is a testament to the municipality’s self-sufficiency in food production, despite the challenges posed by the peak of El Nino. Ogatis reiterated the significance of Calinog as a vital source of food, highlighting its commitment to enhancing the development of its upland barangays to further strengthen agricultural resilience and sustainability.
Iloilo 3rd District Board Member Matt Palabrica lauded the Local Government Unit (LGU) for its unique celebration, which prioritizes the welfare of farmers. He also highlighted the Provincial Government of Iloilo’s commitment to promoting the inclusion of carabaos in the Province-led Agriculture and Fisheries Extension Systems (PAFES) with the goal of elevating them as the top commodity in Iloilo Province. Furthermore, BM Palabrica revealed the Provincial Government’s intention to scale up the carabao program province-wide next year, signaling a significant step to boost agricultural development across Iloilo.
Highlighting the importance of farmers, especially amid the pandemic, where th
ey played a crucial role in feeding the world, Palabrica underscores the significance of their legacy and despite challenges, he encouraged farmers continue to celebrate their success, emphasizing resilience.
“As we celebrate the Semana ka Mangunguma, we recognize the farmers invaluable contribution to society. I hope that we will find means for all of us to unite in fighting the damages of El Nino, so that we can continue and be prepared for whatever lies ahead,” BM Palabrica underscored.
The festival’s activities range from trade fairs showcasing local produce to culinary contests celebrating traditional and innovative dishes. Moreover, educational sessions on various agricultural techniques, including animal husbandry and aquaculture, aim to empower farmers with knowledge and skills essential for sustainable farming practices.
In alignment with principles of animal welfare and public health, the festival also offers services such as spaying and neutering for pets, alongside anti-rabies vaccinations, ensuring the well-being of both animals and communities.
