More than 120 farmers, fisherfolk, and livestock raisers participated in the Agricultural Information Caravan on April 29, held at the Capitol Grounds as part of the 69th Aklan Day Anniversary.
Organized by the Department of Agriculture – Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section (DA-RAFIS) in partnership with the Aklan Provincial Agriculture Office, the event aimed to bring agriculture support services directly to the community, offering opportunities for learning and dialogue.
Aklan Provincial Agriculturist Engr. Alexys Apolonio welcomed participants and stressed the importance of the event in informing farmers and fisherfolk about government programs that can improve their livelihoods.
“This Caravan is a meaningful way for us to let our farmers and fisherfolk know that programs are available for them. It also allows us to update them on innovations that can improve their livelihood and boost productivity,” Apolonio emphasized.
During the program, technical representatives from the DA and partner agencies shared the programs. The DA Soils Laboratory discussed soil testing and fertilizer recommendations, while the Regional Crop Protection Center provided updates on pest and diseases management. The High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) introduced priority crops and technologies, and the National Food Authority (NFA) explained its rice procurement program and food security role.
Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Ma. Cyrosa Leen Mabel Sinel, also presented the province’s animal health, livestock, and poultry programs, emphasizing veterinary support and services for local raisers.
The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) talked about crop insurance, and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) highlighted its support for fisherfolk, including aquaculture programs and fishing gear distribution.
The open forum allowed participants to ask questions and discuss topics like insurance, soil health, pest control, and market access. Attendees also received farm tools and information, education and communication materials.
This caravan was part of the week-long Provincial Agri-Aqua Trade Fair, aimed at showcasing Aklan’s agriculture and fisheries sectors and promoting local products.###
