Advancing Soybean Potential: DA-WV Consultation for Opportunities and Challenges

The recent Soybean Stakeholders’ Consultation Meeting facilitated by the Department of Agriculture Western Visayas’ Corn Program, brought together players in the agricultural sector to explore the potential of soybeans as an efficient and sustainable alternative crop. The meeting underscored the importance of quality in driving the industry’s growth while shedding light on the current state of soybean production in the region.

Rodolfo Panganiban, the National Soybean Focal Person, opened the discussion with an inspiring talk on the versatile benefits of soybeans. Highlighting its economic and nutritional advantages, Panganiban emphasized how soybeans could transform farming communities. “Soybeans are more than just a crop—they’re an opportunity for farmers to innovate especially when it comes to byproducts. We thrive through this in the hopes of no longer importing goods from other places. Rather, we strive to reach our potential, and later on, export our quality products,” he stated. He also pointed out that success in this endeavor hinges on the industry’s commitment to maintaining high-quality standards throughout the value chain.

The meeting also featured an update on the industry’s performance and current situation, presented by Shannen Jhen P. Isanan of ROS Dumarao. Isanan delivered an in-depth report, showcasing both achievements and areas for improvement. From production trends to market challenges, the presentation served as a valuable roadmap for stakeholders aiming to strengthen the soybean sector.

Discussions during the consultation focused on addressing gaps in the supply chain, exploring market opportunities, and ensuring farmers receive the necessary support to transition to soybean cultivation effectively.
