A Lifetime of Service: Erlinda Salmo’s Journey of Inspiring Generations

In November 1975, Erlinda Salmo embarked on a path that would lead her to touch the lives of countless individuals. Starting her career in the Department of Agriculture (then known as the Bureau of Agricultural Extension), Miss Erlinda’s journey has been one of commitment, dedication, and selfless service. As a Personnel Officer in the Human Resources Office, she found herself in a role that perfectly aligned with her passion for nurturing relationships, fostering growth, and creating an environment that would inspire both her colleagues and future generations.

Retiring in December 2008 after 33 years of service, Miss Erlinda left a lasting legacy, but her journey was far from over. Now, as an active member and officer of the DA 6-Retirees Association, she continues to be a source of wisdom and inspiration for the younger generation of public servants. This October, as the country celebrates Elderly Week with the theme “Building the Nation, Inspiring Generation,” Miss Erlinda’s story resonates deeply with this vision.

For her, the elderly play an important role in society, not just as keepers of wisdom but as active participants in shaping the future. “The elderly should focus on inspiring the new generation by creating programs and providing venues for interaction,” she says. “We must share the practical, inspirational, and informational experiences that we’ve gained over time.”

Miss Erlinda’s philosophy on life and work is simple but profound: relationships are the cornerstone of a fulfilled life. During her years at the Department of Agriculture, she believed that a harmonious work environment was built on good relationships and a network of trust. “If you don’t know, don’t fear to ask,” was one of her guiding principles—a reminder that humility is a strength. Her belief in empowering others led her to create opportunities for her colleagues to enhance their capabilities, ensuring that the agency benefitted from the growth of every individual.

Her journey with the Department began long before her official employment. In 1973, she was selected as a representative of the Philippines for a training program in Taiwan, part of the 4H Club’s International Farm Youth Exchange Program. Her leadership potential was evident, and she was awarded as an Outstanding Young Leader at Malacañang Palace. This experience ignited her passion for the 4H Club, and she later served as the Regional Coordinator, guiding and inspiring countless young farmers.

Through her efforts, the region discovered national winners—young individuals who would go on to achieve remarkable success in their respective fields. One of her former protégés, an Outstanding Young Farmer, went on to become an award-winning employee at a prestigious hotel in London, thanks to the skills he gained in hydroponics during an exchange program in Japan. This achievement, Erlinda notes, is a testament to the power of mentorship and relationships. “Our life in the end will not be defined by how much money we have,” she reflects. “My life will be defined by what others become because of me.”

Even in retirement, Miss Erlinda continues to make a difference. As the President of the Elderly Group in her community and an active member of the Catechism and Worship Ministry in San Miguel, Iloilo, she remains dedicated to service. She believes that, despite the rapid advancements in technology, the values of commitment, love for work, and the goal of helping others must remain constant.

Miss Erlinda’s story is not just one of personal achievement but of the lives she has touched and the generations she has inspired. Her life is a beautiful reminder that relationships—built on trust, humility, and a genuine desire to see others succeed—are what truly give meaning to our existence.
