Twenty agro-eco beneficiaries from the Sto. Rosario Farmers Cooperative and Lapaz Farmers Association in Jamindan, Capiz, received various agricultural interventions during a turnover ceremony held on February 20, 2025, at Brgy. Rosario, Jamindan, Capiz.
The beneficiaries were provided with an organic production facility, goats, carabaos, cows, chickens, ducks, vegetable seedlings, and tilapia fingerlings. These interventions aim to enhance their agro-ecological farming practices.
Municipal Agriculturist Alberto E. Valdemar emphasized that all beneficiaries are active members of their respective associations, primarily engaged in agro-eco-based rice farming. He said the facility was provided by the Department of Agriculture-Western Visayas (DA-WV) in partnership with Rice Watch Action Network (RWAN). The initiative aims to support farmers in producing organic fertilizers and pesticides, reducing the reliance on chemical inputs in food production.
“Our organic production program aligns with both national and provincial government initiatives. The provincial government aims to make at least 10% of our agricultural products organic. Our municipality is also working towards ensuring safer food consumption,” Valdemar stated.
Jamindan Mayor Mac Arthur L. Valdemar commended the farmers for their dedication to sustainable farming. He acknowledged that due to their responsible management as an association, the DA and RWAN continue to entrust them with new projects. During the ceremony, he expressed his hope that the partnership between DA and the farmers of Jamindan will strengthen, further boosting agricultural success in Brgy. Sto. Rosario.
Local farmer mentor Ceasar Castro also shared his appreciation, recalling the association’s long-standing advocacy for organic farming. He acknowledged the significant role of RWAN in training and supporting their efforts, recognizing that organic farming is a challenging yet essential practice.
“The interventions given to us are not an endpoint but a beginning. This is not just about practicing organic agriculture; it is part of the government’s food security program,” Castro said.
He further stressed that food security is not only about producing a sufficient supply of agricultural products but also ensuring their nutritional value.
Meanwhile, DA-WV Agriculturist I Ian Divinagracia explained that agro-ecology is a sustainable farming approach that encourages farmers to maximize available resources in their areas. He advised rice farmers to diversify their sources of income by integrating livestock, vegetable production, and fisheries into their farming systems.
