The Department of Agriculture (DA) through the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) has turned over a ₱2-million Coffee Processing Facility to the Artuz Farmers Production and Marketing Association (AFPAMA) in Tapaz, Capiz, strengthening local coffee production and value-adding initiatives in the municipality.
The facility will enable farmers to process their own beans and produce quality coffee products for the market. It is expected to uplift the income of members and support the development of a local coffee enterprise.
The municipality of Tapaz has around 300 hectares of coffee areas spread across 23 uplands barangays, where fruiting trees are already being harvested. With this new facility, farmers can now process and market their own produce, adding greater value to their harvests.
Established in 2-17, the Artuz Farmers Production and Marketing Association currently has 179 active members, many of whom are engaged in coffee farming.
According to DA-HVCDP Deputy Program Focal Person Jonifer Frades, the turnover is part of the Department’s effort to strengthen the entire coffee value chain — from production to processing and marketing.
“Through this facility, our farmers will not only produce coffee but will also gain from processing and branding their own products. This is a step toward making them true agri-entrepreneurs,” said Frades.
AFPAMA President Roy Palomar expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the facility will significantly boost their livelihood and improve the quality of their products.
Witnessing the turnover were representatives from the Municipal Government of Tapaz, the Provincial Agriculture Office of Capiz, and other stakeholders in the local coffee industry.
With this intervention, the DA continues to strengthen its support for the Philippine Coffee Industry Roadmap, empowering communities to produce high-quality, competitive, and sustainable coffee that uplifts the livelihood of farmers across Western Visayas. # (Text by: Myleen S.
