Aklan State University (ASU) marked another milestone in agricultural advancement as it held the groundbreaking ceremony for its Cattle Multiplier Farm on February 3, 2026, at the ASU Agri-based Science and Technology Leisure Farm in Banga, Aklan. The initiative, implemented from the funding support of the Department of Agriculture (DA) National Livestock Program (NLP), positions ASU as a key player in revitalizing the cattle industry in Western Visayas.

The project is part of the NLP’s nationwide strategy to strengthen livestock production systems, reverse the declining local cattle production, and reduce the country’s reliance on imported beef. According to Project Leader Prof. Ma. Rema Lauron, ASU was identified as a strategic partner due to its strong Animal Science program, technical expertise, and established capacity for research and extension services.

Prof. Lauron explained that the Cattle Multiplier Farm directly responds to the national goal of accelerating herd buildup and enhancing the genetic quality of cattle breeds across the Philippines. “Although ASU’s facilities were not originally designed for large ruminants, the university has the academic foundation and regional relevance needed to host a modern, science-based breeding center,” she said. She emphasized that the farm will serve as a “living laboratory” for faculty, students, and researchers, providing hands-on experience and contributing to innovations in livestock management, animal health, and sustainable farming practices.

The project, funded with an initial investment of ₱4.5 million from the DA NLP, will equip ASU with upgraded infrastructure for cattle housing, breeding, waste management, and research operations. These developments will further strengthen the university’s position as a regional hub for livestock training, technology transfer, and community-based extension programs. Once operational, the farm is expected to increase the supply of quality breeder cattle, support farmers through dispersal programs, and contribute to climate-resilient and sustainable livestock systems in Aklan and neighboring provinces.

In his message during the ceremony, ASU University President, Dr. Jeffrey A. Clarin, expressed deep appreciation for the DA’s trust in the institution. “Our partnership with the Department of Agriculture is more than a funding opportunity, it is a shared commitment to elevate state universities as active contributors to agricultural innovation,” he stated. He acknowledged the challenges in preparing existing facilities for this type of project but affirmed the university’s resolve to strengthen its systems and technical capacity. “Beyond the initial investment, we are dedicated to building the infrastructure, expertise, and long-term management systems needed to sustain this project well into the future,” he added.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key provincial and regional officials, including Ms. Ilyn Belenario, Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer of Aklan representing DA RFO 6 Regional Executive Director Dennis Arpia; Dr. Mabel Señil, Aklan Provincial Veterinarian; and Ms. Fernie Dollolasa of the NLP Regional Field Office 6. Representatives from the Banga Municipal Agriculture Office, Barangay Council of Libas, and student leaders.###
